"Empowering Parents with
Information and Involvement"

Isobel SaundersHi, my name is Isobel Saunders, I am the Development Officer for Neath Port Talbot Parent Network

The Parent Network seeks to ensure that parents and carers are fully involved and have their opinions heard on issues which are important to them in services and decisions about services within Neath Port Talbot.

We do this through regular Parent Panel meetings and through Parent and worker participation in consultation events and strategic meetings, with the aim to effect beneficial change in the development of all services to children and families within this area.

So how does this work in practice? And how do parents feel about their involvement?

From our experience, and feedback, parents have found that getting involved with the Parent Network has been both interesting and fun!  Look in our Current News section for recent activities!

To learn more about The Parent Network of NPT, what we do and how we can help, simply click here or contact us.

The Parent Network is free and available to all parents and carers living in NPT who have a child/children up to 25 years old.

PARENTS' PANEL UPDATE

The Parents’ Panel is a growing group of enthusiastic parents/carers who get together on a regular basis. We talk about a varierty of issues and give our views on a variety of local organisations, groups and issues.

We also get involved in local events and fundays like the family funday which took place in Godregraig in October. Perhaps you met us there! We carried out a survey on that day, looking at parents views on the role of mothers. Thank you for all who took part. This was one of three surveys which have taken place this year. The other two were "What about Dads?" and "What about Parents?" lots of parents took part in these. The outcomes of each survey will now be analysed, and the reports will be produced. These reports can be used to inform the many forums and groups that the Parent Network is represented in, making sure parent's issues are being raised at all levels. Thank you for your involvement.

Remember !
The quick vote this past month asked if parents know where to go for information about services for children and families in this area. Well, the result of the survey showed that most do not know where to do go for this information.

INFORMATION EXCHANGE:

Let me introduce you to the "Family Information Service" which provides free information, advice and help on: childcare, early years development, training and work opportunities and funding within childcare and early years, in the Neath Port Talbot area. We also did a quick vote a little while back asking for parent views on the cleanliness of parks and children's play areas. Well!!! as a result of this, we have discussed it at our Advisory Group, and are now able to provide a contact telephone number for a number of agencies. These agencies can be contacted if parents are concerned about the state of their local park or play area, and they can report their concerns, so that action can be taken!!! and thanks for all those parents who gave their vote and/or their views on this.

CONSULTATION
The next big consultation and survey which the Parent Network are being asked to consider being involved in, is looking at the views of parents whose children experience a period in hospital, and how the children and young people experience this.

This survey will take place at Morriston hospital Children's Ward from February 2010, and has been commissioned by the "Association for the Welfare of Children in Hospital." (AWCH).

The survey report will be available to the hospital authorities for use when planning services for families. If you and your children are likely to be using the hospital services for a hospital stay during this period and you recieve our questionnaire, your views would be very much appreciated.

The Neath Port Talbot Community Plan Consultation is currently taking place and Parent Panel have been asked to give their views on this within specified deadlines for the consultation period.

Social Services Review: Thank you to all parent members who participated in this. We are awaiting the outcomes.

If as a parent or carer you have any views about what you and your family would like from this event, please email us with your views. These would be gratefully appreciated. We will post up our events as soon as dates are confirmed.

Bye for now! and watch this space.........................
